JULY 24th Digging Results

Greek

Dan and his magic fruit jars.
Hello out there, we found two (2) privies behind this nice little Greek last Saturday. They were right under a wooden fence in the back yard making them a little cumbersome to dig, but that didn't stop us. Actually it was really hard digging these privies because we had to do a lot of undermining and also had to make sure we didn't dig loose one of the main fence posts. ME

This pit was fairly shallow, only about 4 feet deep and ranged in years from the 1860's to 1880's. It was mostly full of friut jars; GEM, DEXTER MIDGET, HERO, 1858's, stuff like that.

JUST YANK IT OUT!

A funny little tidbit to add here is that when we approached the home owners about digging they said they had found an "old bottle" in there garden a few years ago and offered to show us. We said "sure" with our pre-rehearsed voice of enthusiasm knowing darn well that they would be bringing out a 1930's amber clorox bottle that we would have to pretend to be interested in. The guy hands us an embossed 1870's crude aqua DAVIDS' IGLOO INK, and says he has no idea what kind of goofy bottle this is. The top hole was chiped but Dan and I looked at each other and said "THAT'S NICE".

We finished both pits in this yard with a new fruit jar collection. There was a nice food bottle that was broken, a DOYLE'S HOPS that was broken, then mostly all common stuff. A nice glass egg was the only other significant find in these pits besides the fruit jars to surface. Where did the DAVID'S ink in the background come from?

We started two (2) more pits later in the day down the road at another Greek Revival home.

DIRTY DAN

"WOW, ANOTHER FRUIT JAR"!

We each had our own pit to finish off the day. Dan's was 1890's, and mine was 1880's and back to the 1870's. Dan's pit turned out a lot of bottles and a beautiful green pitcher, and more ground top jars. My hole turned out some O.K. bottles also and then I saw it lying bottom up, a perfectly entact DAVIDS' IGLOO INK! That was dumb luck eh.

Another interesting bottle was a neat stoneware double collared cone ink.

INK

Well here is a days take. I had first pick of this litter, so I got the ink. That was cool but poor Dan got stuck with a fruit jar for his first pick, kind of a long way away from his favorite, an early beer bottle. Oh well, maybe next time.
