APRIL 25th Digging Results

ECLECTIC

Early spring in Michigan. Crisp cool air, sunny blue skies, a shovel, digging bucket and tarps. What does that add up to you ask, a privy hunt!
Carl and I probed this yard for about 10 minutes and pretty much decided that the hole corner of this city lot had been privies back in the day. There was a well in the center that I thought might be a gold mine. After digging into it for a six foot test hole, it turned out to be a dud, filled in with post turn of the century garbage. Oh well that happens, (a lot). Maybe next century.

The pits where all on top of eachother, so we outlined the best probing pit and went at it. This rambunctious little lady below was trying to weasle her way into the pit to dig. She was real fired up to dig. I think she was a friend of the home owner so I gave her a local embossed druggist since she grew up here in the town.

CHOPPIN

A few things up high in the fill, a DRUGGIST & PUMPKIN SEED FLASK.

I will date this pit right around the 1890's. I'm happy to be in non-machine made bottles anytime.

I'm safe

This WARNER'S SAFE CURE has been about 12 inches from the surface for the past 100 years, just below thier feet in the back yard!

Something was starting to fight back pretty hard down in the hole as we opened it up wider. It was a huge rock that was rolled in from who knows where when the original occupants decided to fill this privy in.

ROCKER

OK,..what's the plan....?

MICH

This is a VERY rare cough syrup from KALAMAZOO MICHIGAN. Carl is getting excited and so am I! I wonder who is going to win this in the toss.

Here we are making our way AROUND this big 300+ pound stone.

BIG ROCK

Carl found these nice beauties on the bottom, a weird UK CODD SODA Groves & Whitnall Ltd Salford (yellow) & a cute cobalt mini Stafford Master INK mint.

There where actually several pits we dug all in the same location that day. They really produced a lot of blown pre-turn of the century glass. Something good for everybody.
